The Key to Success is Having Idea Sex

The key to success is not just wanting to be successful, the key is having idea sex and having idea babies.  Note: This is not my brilliant strategy, but rather the genius of Justine Musk, the first wife of billionaire Elon Musk (you know, the founder of PayPal and the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and has an estimated net worth of $12.1 billion – yes, that guy).

Some posted the following question to Quora: Will I become a billionaire if I am determined to become one and put in the necessary work to become one? Justine Musk gave a brilliant answer following the short, simple, and accurate response: No.

Her advice: “Choose one thing and become a master of it.  Choose a second thing and become a master of that.  When you become a master of two worlds (say, engineering and business), you can bring them together in a way that will…introduce hot ideas to each other, so they can have idea sex and make idea babies that no one has seen before.” I read this advice a few months ago and it makes complete sense and confirmed the weird and wonderful way that I live my life.

A few years ago, when I was looking for a job I realized that the one that I wanted didn’t exist – so I created it.  While many people seem confused by the mashup of work that I do, the people that I work with understand that is my biggest asset.  I look at things from a unique perspective.  As I said back in April, “stop trying to find a place where you fit and instead, create a place that you love.” I stand by it, but if only I had put it more eloquently, “have idea sex and idea babies.” So, in case some of you need advice in a way that only Justine can give.

Bottom Line: I had a very high opinion of myself. Perhaps with good reason. – Edith Piaf
